Large tracts of ocean view and beach front land were purchased and sat on for years, possible by the low-low property taxes in Costa Rica, but are now coming back on the market, bolstered, by the promise of the 2nd version of the new marina, this one, a world class facility set for ground breaking in 2019 and completion by 2022. Along with existing structures that are on the real estate market, there is a lot of development land available. For such a small place, there's a surprising amount of real estate to consider from affordable condos just off the beach to beachfront estates that simply take your breath away. These properties are generally higher end, luxury 2nd homes, or vacation rental homes that do very well in the high season from about October through to April. Over the decades, visitors have purchased much of the land and only a portion has been built on. This attracted more wealth to the area than it was use to. The initial surge of popularity in the 80's was mainly due to the first version of the marina being built. From Flamingo, can get to Playa Grande in 30 minutes, Tamarindo in 35 minutes, and the international airport in Liberia in about an hour. There are many other services such as banks and hardware stores and food shopping and farmer's market in the surrounding areas of Surfside/ Potrero and Brasilito, no more than a 10 minute drive away. With the influx of traffic, "The Plaza" began to take form, a commercial center on the North Ridge, which hosts several great restaurants, many small businesses as well as basic services like a pharmacy, grocery store, car rental, tours and vacation rentals. The beach road runs parallel to the beach and hosts only a few structures near the south ridge, and on the other side of the road is a protected estuary that fills and empties with the tides into the bay of Potrero on the other side of the north ridge. As a resident, this writer can tell you, there is just something about this place. Nestled between the north and south ridges where the majority of structures are, the beach itself is a 1 km long strip of white, clean, gorgeous sand that descends into deep Azul waters with panoramic views of the Catalina Islands about 7 km off shore and the setting for what many believe to be the best sunsets in the world. With land so cheap at the time, and the incredibly low property taxes in Costa Rica, many purchased land on the north and south ridges that sandwich this otherwise untouched beach, and slowly, the hills were populated with beautiful homes.
The first early version of the Marina popped up in the 80's attracting lots of boating enthusiast and many of them falling for this beautiful place instantly. Always known for it's pristine beach and stunning world class sunsets, this place 'caught on' sometime in the 70's and it's been slowly but steadily growing since.
